The PAMI Stent Pilot Study was presented, which showed the safety and efficacy of Stent implantation in the AMI setting. In 312 patiens, TIMI flow III was achieved in 97 % of patients ( x 93 % in PTCA ). There was no episodes of subacute thrombosis after a regimen of 48 h of Heparin followed by treatment with aspirin and ticlopidine.

The BERT 1 study showed that b endovascular irradiation can reduce the rate of reestenosis in a small group of patients studies, while the FLARE Trial showed no difference in the reestenosis ( 28 % x 30 % ) rate in patients receeving Fluvastatin 80 mg/day after successful PTCA when compared with placebo.

The UAB Trial implanted Carotid Stents in 254 patients, 80 % of which with concomitant coronary artery disease ( 86 % of whom would be excluded by the NASCET carotid endarterectomy study ). Technical success was achieved in 98 % of cases, with a combined end point of Major Stroke and Death of 2.4 % . Minor Stroke occured in 6 %, half of which was unnoticed by patients. There was 1 acute Stent thrombosis and no subacute thrombosis. The reestenosis rate was an impressevely 6 %, showing that Carotid Stents can be a safe and effective alternative to Carotid Endarterectomy in patients with Carotid lesions of more than 70 %.
