Name five inherited polyposis syndromes.

Answer

  1. Familial Polyposis - is an autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by adenomas of the colon. There is an association with adenomatous polyps or cancer of the periampular region. When osteomas or soft tissue tumors are present, this condition is called Gardner's syndrome.

  2. Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome - is an autosomal dominat polyposis syndrome with mucocutaneous pigmentation, particularly of the bucal mucosa. The polyps are hamartomas, not adenomas, which carry a low risk for malignant transformation.

  3. Turcot Syndrome - Refers to colonic adenomas with CNS tumors.

  4. Juvenile Polyposis - is an autosomal dominant syndrome with gastrointestinal bleeding from polyps of the colon, small bowel, and stomach.

  5. Cronkhite-Canada Syndrome - is a very rare association of intestinal polyps with alopecia, hyperpigmentation, and a lack of fingernails.
