What are the Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndromes?

Answer

There are three types of Multiple endocrine Neoplasia(MEN).

  • MEN I (Wermer's syndrome)

  • Hyperparathyroidism - is present in 90% of cases
  • Pancreatic tumors - are present in 80% of cases
  • Pituitary tumors - are present in 65% of cases

  • MEN II (IIa) (Sipple´s syndrome)

  • Medullary thyroid carcinoma - occurs in all patients
  • Pheochromocytomas - are present in 40% of cases
  • Parathyroid hyperplasia - occurs in 60% of cases

  • MEN III (IIb)

  • Multiple neuromatous mucosal nodules
  • Distorted body habitus
  • Pheochromocytomas
  • Medullary thyroid carcinoma
